My Portland Leather Koala Sling Bag: A Little Nutmeg for Fall
I’m fairly predictable when it comes to a beautiful brown leather bag. Add room for my Kindle, and you have my attention.

I realize there are other perfectly reasonable ways to evaluate a handbag, but this is where I begin.
There’s also room for my wallet, keys, sunglasses, lip gloss, and reading glasses. Plus whatever small object one of my children hands me because apparently I remain the family purse.
For me, that’s a useful balance: enough space for what I want to carry, including something to read.
Why I Chose Nutmeg
Nutmeg is exactly the kind of brown I’m drawn to. Warm, easy to wear, and lovely alongside navy, cream, denim, and the softer colors that tend to fill my closet.
I love the character of leather, too. There’s something appealing about a bag that becomes more familiar with use, gathering the little marks of being carried through your life.
I can picture this one coming along for lunch with friends, errands, bookstore browsing, and afternoons on a soccer sideline. The everyday outings that rarely require a special outfit but still deserve a bag I enjoy carrying.
Knowing What I Like
One of my favorite things about this stage of life is that I’m getting better at recognizing what suits me.
I know the colors I reach for. I know that a bag needs to hold my reading glasses and a book or Kindle. And I know that something can be practical while also being a pleasure to own.
So many purchases are tied to the house, the children, or whatever needs doing next. Sometimes it’s lovely to choose something simply because it’s beautiful, useful to you, and exactly what you wanted.
This bag feels like one of those things.
